Auction 101 for Buyers
Buying at auction is an exhilarating experience! The atmosphere of bidding against
other buyers coupled with great below retail prices, AND unusual items all make for
an unforgettable time. Although the basics of buying at auction are simple, it can
seem intimidating at first. We want the novice buyer to feel confident & at ease, so
we have outlined a step by step guide to make your first time buying a success. But
be forewarned….you may get hooked!
Just follow the steps below and also feel free to approach our friendly staff with any
questions you may have.
STEPS
1. You will need to register so you can be identified as a bidder. You will be
given a permanent bid card number that you will use every time you bid at auction.
We keep a record of your name, address, & phone number on file. If you are
exempt from paying sales tax, we have a resale certificate for you to fill out. Please
be prepared to provide us with the appropriate documents to verify your exempt
status.
2. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the items to be auctioned. You are
welcome to preview before the auction. Generally, our preview hours are as
follows: Friday – noon to 5 pm: Monday – 9 am to 7 pm: and Tuesdays before the
auction. We also post a complete catalog listing and photos on our website by noon
Friday. You can print a catalog for your reference or purchase one at our front
window for $ 1.00.
3. After viewing the items you are interested in, decide on a bid limit for
yourself. By giving yourself a “stopping point”, you will avoid getting swept away in
the excitement of live bidding. Remember also, there is 14% Buyers Premium that is
added to the final bid price of each lot.
4. Can’t attend the auction in person? No problem. We offer absentee bidding
as a courtesy to our customers. We have absentee bid forms both online and at
the auction house to leave with the staff. All absentee bids are STRICTLY
CONFIDENTIAL and we make every effort to execute your instructions. You can
leave a bid in person, via fax or email, and by phone. Please fill out the bid form
completely & accurately to eliminate errors. Also, as a rule of thumb, we will start at
a percentage of the lowest absentee bid dependent on the discretion of the
auctioneer. Note: Leaving an absentee bid is not the same as phone bidding. We
do not take phone bids for day session and have only limited phone bidding for
Premier Auctions. This courtesy is extended to people out of state or the country
and is by reservation only.
5. Make your presence known to the auctioneer when you participate in a floor
bid. Make sure he/she knows you are participating and hold your card up for
reference. If you are awarded the highest bid, the item can be taken once recorded
and paid for at the front office.
6. Our policy is to have items paid for and removed from the warehouse within 7
days of the auction. We are not responsible for items left past one week. We
accept Visa, MasterCard, checks and, of course, cash.
7. Have fun! Auctions can be very entertaining and rewarding. We want you to
have a great experience and strive to make our auction house the best. We have
many buyers who attend on a regular basis and we have enjoyed getting to know
each and every one of them. We look forward to establishing the same relationship
with you.
